A diplomatic crisis between Warsaw and Kyiv, fueled by historical disagreements, requires immediate resolution. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stated directly that he expects Ukraine to take decisive steps to de-escalate tensions in bilateral relations. According to the Polish leader, Kyiv's recent decision to honor historical figures of the UPA was a serious mistake that has exacerbated the situation.
Yushchenko's letter and the demand for reciprocity
During a recent press conference, the head of the Polish government revealed details of the diplomatic dialogue. Tusk reported receiving several signals from former and current Ukrainian politicians. In particular, he mentioned a letter from former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, which contains a call for joint work on the historical past of the two countries.
Tusk emphasized the importance of such initiatives so that the past does not dictate conditions for the future, but noted that Warsaw expects reciprocity. "We expect Ukraine to take the first step after this unfortunate decision by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It would be good to hear a very clear signal from Kyiv. They are trying, but we still want to hear it clearly," the Polish Prime Minister stated.
Conflict catalyst: the title 'Heroes of the UPA' and the Order of the White Eagle
The situation intensified at the end of May when Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded the Independent Special Operations Center (SSO) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine the honorary title 'Heroes of the UPA'. This decision provoked sharp criticism among Polish officials. The Ukrainian Insurgent Army remains one of the most sensitive issues in relations between the countries due to the Volhynian tragedy of 1943. Poland officially recognizes these events as genocide, while Ukrainian historians view them as part of a bilateral conflict.
Tensions reached a peak when Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced the revocation of the Order of the White Eagle from Zelenskyy. In response, the Ukrainian President returned the award to Warsaw via courier the very next day, which served as a hard diplomatic signal.
The shadow of Moscow: Russian intelligence against partnership
Against the backdrop of a real diplomatic crisis, the Russian information machine has become active. The Kremlin is preparing another attack against the Ukrainian-Polish partnership. This time, Russian intelligence services plan to use falsified historical materials to provoke a conflict over the topic of the Volhynian tragedy.
It is worth recalling that Russia has repeatedly launched campaigns to create a rift between Ukraine and Poland, trying to artificially ignite old disputes. According to Ukrainian intelligence, the curator and organizer of these information operations is the Director of the FSB of Russia, Alexander Bortnikov. Russian state media regularly receive the task of spreading such disinformation.
The intensification of propaganda occurs precisely when real discussions arise in the bilateral relations of the countries. Despite Tusk's calls for concessions, the head of the Polish government assured that Warsaw will continue to support Ukraine in its struggle under any circumstances, not allowing external forces to destroy the strategic alliance.
