On the night of May 29, the sky over the Russian city of Volgograd was illuminated by powerful explosion flashes. Local residents reported continuous strikes that shook the city. According to the latest data, the target of the unmanned aerial vehicle attack was a strategically important facility — the Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka oil refinery.
The situation on the ground is developing rapidly. Russian Telegram channels have already calculated: this is at least the tenth attack on this plant since the beginning of the full-scale war. Eyewitnesses are posting footage of a large-scale fire visible from afar. Expert analysis of footage from the Astra service confirms: the fire has engulfed the refinery territory, and the distance from the filming location to the epicenter is about 30 kilometers.
Strikes on Civilian Objects
In addition to the industrial target, strikes also hit residential areas. The Governor of the Volgograd region, Andrey Bocharov, officially stated that one of the drones hit a multi-apartment building in the Krasnooktyabrsky district. Fortunately, according to him, there were no casualties among the residents, but the fact of hitting a residential sector speaks to the high intensity of the raid.
Strategic Importance of the Target
The Lukoil-Volgogradneftepererabotka plant is not just an enterprise, but one of the key assets of the largest Russian oil company. More than 15 million tons of oil are processed here annually. The enterprise specializes in deep raw material processing and the production of products critical for the army and economy: gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, as well as bitumen and fuel oil.
Recall that in February of this year, Volgograd was already subjected to a massive attack, as a result of which a large-scale fire broke out at the plant. The repetition of the scenario in May indicates that Russian oil refining capacities remain a priority target for Ukrainian strikes, causing significant damage to the logistics and economy of the Russian Federation.
