A major scandal has erupted in world football that could lead to significant personnel changes in the leadership of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA). The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has issued a stern statement, subjecting the actions of the FIFA leadership to unprecedented criticism. The trigger for the conflict was the decision to overturn the suspension of US national team striker Folarin Balogun.
World Cup 2026 Scandal: Regulation Violation
The situation escalated following the Round of 16 match of the 2026 World Cup, where the US national team crushed Bosnia and Herzegovina with a score of 2:0. During the match, the American striker Folarin Balogun received a straight red card for a foul against the opponent's defender Tarik Muharemovic. According to standard rules, the player is required to miss the next playoff match — the Round of 8 game against Belgium, which is scheduled to take place on July 7 in Seattle.
However, FIFA took an unprecedented step: the automatic punishment was replaced with a one-year "probationary period." This decision allowed Balogun to take the field in the upcoming match, sparking an outcry in the professional community.

According to insiders, the change in the footballer's fate is due to direct interference by the US administration. The White House and Donald Trump are credited with a personal appeal to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the verdict. Although the international federation officially denies political influence, Trump himself has already publicly thanked FIFA for this decision.
In its statement, the European football association called FIFA's actions "unprecedented, incomprehensible, and unjustified." UEFA emphasized that a minimum suspension of one match is a principle that cannot be subject to exceptions.
