Ukraine and Denmark are taking their military cooperation to a new level, transforming bilateral relations into a full-fledged strategic alliance. The focus is not merely on humanitarian aid, but on creating a joint defense ecosystem capable of countering modern threats. Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, during negotiations with his Danish counterpart Troels Lund Poulsen, outlined ambitious plans: from scaling drone production to developing a domestic anti-ballistic shield.
The Formula for Success: Money into Production
A key element of the dialogue was the so-called "Danish model" of support. It radically changes the logic of aid: instead of simply purchasing ready-made systems, partners invest directly in Ukrainian factories. This allows for a rapid increase in production volumes without diverting resources from the front lines.
- Since 2024, the mechanism has already attracted about $3 billion.
- With these funds, more than 200,000 drones, thousands of EW systems, and batches of missiles have been produced.
- The goal is to accelerate deliveries to the front while simultaneously modernizing Ukraine's defense industry.
Drone Deal and Localization in Europe
The parties discussed the implementation of the Drone Deal initiative, which is designed to facilitate technology exchange and accelerate the launch of new unmanned systems onto the market. An important point was the discussion of localizing production in Denmark itself. This is a mutually beneficial step: Ukraine receives additional funds for the front, while Denmark gains access to battle-proven technologies that have already demonstrated their effectiveness.
Anti-Ballistic Shield: A Challenge for Missiles
The most intriguing item on the agenda was Kyiv's proposal for Denmark to join the creation of a domestic anti-ballistic project. Ukraine is seeking partners to develop next-generation air defense systems. In particular, the Danish side could contribute modern radars that would become the "eyes" of the future shield. This would allow for the creation of an integrated defense system capable of intercepting the enemy's high-precision weapons.
Funding Before Ramstein
Mykhailo Fedorov also raised the issue of urgently allocating additional aid before the next meeting of the contact group in the "Ramstein" format, scheduled for June. These resources are necessary to implement the defense strategy and ensure uninterrupted supply to the Defense Forces. Ukraine expects Denmark to continue supporting the scaling of Ukrainian missile production, betting on long-term partnership.
