A historic event for Ukrainian aviation took place in Kyiv: Ukraine and Sweden officially signed an agreement to purchase Swedish Gripen E fighter jets. The signing of the document marked a new stage in the modernization of the Ukrainian Air Force and the expansion of military cooperation with European partners.
The ceremony was held in a solemn atmosphere. Photos from the event show Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov, as well as representatives of the Swedish side, including Swedish Minister of Defense Pär Westerberg. Behind the leaders stood the flags of the two countries, symbolizing strategic partnership.
Deal Details and Contract Composition
According to a statement by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the deal provides for the delivery of 16 fifth-generation Gripen E fighter jets. However, the contract is not limited to the supply of aircraft alone. Zelenskyy particularly emphasized the comprehensive nature of the agreement:
"Together with Sweden, we continue to strengthen Ukrainian combat aviation. Today, our countries have signed an agreement to purchase 16 Gripen E fighter jets. It is important that along with the aircraft, there will be a package of corresponding equipment, technical assistance, and support".
Ukrainian Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov confirmed that extensive preparatory work has been carried out to implement the project. Teams from the defense ministries of both countries, together with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), have coordinated all technical and logistical issues.
Delivery Timelines and Personnel Training
One of the key questions of interest to the public has been the timeline for the new equipment to enter service. According to preliminary agreements, the first 16 aircraft (Gripen C/D versions) will enter the Ukrainian Air Force as early as the beginning of 2027.
Parallel to the preparations for delivery, work is underway on personnel staffing. Mykhailo Fedorov noted that Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel are already undergoing training in Sweden. This is necessary so that by the time the equipment arrives, the specialists are fully ready to operate and maintain the fighter jets.
"In addition to the aircraft, Ukraine will receive the necessary equipment, logistical and technical support," summarized the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
Strategic Context of the Agreement
Questions regarding the possible sale of Gripen fighters were discussed by the parties even before the official signing of the relevant agreement. Earlier, Sweden explained that supporting Ukraine is an important component of ensuring the country's own national security. The signing of the contract became the logical conclusion of long negotiations and confirmed Stockholm's readiness for long-term partnership with Kyiv.
