Ukraine may be about to launch a new annual educational tradition: a National Mathematics Test. The initiative, proposed during a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education, Science, and Innovation, suggests holding a large-scale knowledge assessment modeled after the popular Radio Dictation of National Unity. The event is planned to coincide with Science Day, which is celebrated annually in Ukraine on the third Saturday of May.

Initiative and Format

The author of the proposal, Committee Secretary Natalia Pipa, justified the project by citing the high level of public interest in national educational events. According to the initiator, the success of the Radio Dictation of National Unity, which has become a tradition for millions of Ukrainians, demonstrates the public's readiness to test their skills in a nationwide flash mob format. Pipa expressed her intention to send a formal request to the Ministry of Education and Science and to the public broadcaster 'Suspilne' to discuss the technical aspects of the project.

Ministry's Response

Minister of Education and Science Andriy Butenko expressed preliminary support for the idea, emphasizing the importance of detailed discussion. The Minister noted that despite the subject's specifics, which might appear less media-oriented than a language dictation, such a format could generate significant attention toward promoting exact sciences. Butenko also jokingly added that if the mathematics experiment proves successful, requests for similar assessment events in other natural science disciplines, such as physics, chemistry, and biology, might follow in the future.

Context and Current Status

Currently, the proposal is in the discussion stage; no official decisions regarding the format, organizational details, or the exact date of the event have been made. The discussion follows the recent conclusion of the 2026 Radio Dictation of National Unity, held on October 27. This year's text, titled "The Never-Ending Letter," was written by writer and veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war Artur Dron, and the broadcast was hosted by singer Dasha Astafieva and teacher Artur Proydakov.

Significance of the Event

Introducing a National Mathematics Test could be a significant step in promoting STEM education in Ukraine. If implemented, the annual Science Day celebration would gain new momentum, transforming from an official holiday into a nationwide educational event. This would strengthen academic culture and draw citizens' attention to the quality of mathematics education, fostering conditions for the country's intellectual potential to flourish.
