Ukraine is initiating an emergency session of the UN Security Council. The initiative is prompted by massive rocket attacks launched by Russia against peaceful Ukrainian cities. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andriy Sybiga.
Call for Decisive Action
According to the head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, every rocket launched at the country's territory sends a dangerous signal to the entire world. Sybiga emphasized that the aggressor's goal is to convince the international community that violence can replace the rule of law, and that fear is stronger than solidarity.
The Minister called on the President of the UN Security Council from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and all members of the organization to support the request for an emergency meeting. He noted that delay or a sluggish response cannot stop the terror, and the situation can only be corrected by decisive and timely actions.
"The international community must unite to contain the aggressor and continue to promote a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter," Sybiga added.
Scale of the Night Attack
The diplomat's statement came against the backdrop of a massive attack that occurred on the night of July 6. According to RBC-Ukraine, Russia used 419 air weapons against the country: 68 missiles of various types and 351 attack drones. The main blow was struck at Kyiv.
The Ukrainian air defense system shot down or neutralized 363 targets. However, the spokesperson for the Air Force of Ukraine reported that not a single ballistic missile was shot down. An expert explained this by a critical shortage of interceptor missiles for "Patriot" systems. At the same time, the effectiveness of intercepting cruise missiles was almost 100%, whereas for ballistic missiles it was significantly worse.
Consequences of the Strikes and Call to NATO
As a result of the night shelling, parts of residential buildings in the Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts of Kyiv were destroyed. There are reports of casualties and injuries. In the city of Vyshneve in the Kyiv region, due to a fire and the threat of re-detonation, a decision was made to temporarily evacuate more than 500 residents.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to NATO partners to make strong decisions to protect Ukrainian airspace. The head of state noted that missiles for "Patriot" systems are still sitting in the allies' warehouses, creating a vulnerability in the defense system.
