In the penultimate round of the main stage of the Volleyball Nations League, the Ukrainian national volleyball team played a crucial match against Serbia. Despite the "blue and yellows" being considered favorites, the victory went to the opponents. For the Ukrainian team, this defeat was a logical outcome of the statistics: Ukrainians still have not recorded a single victory in an official match against the Serbs.

History of the Rivalry and Tournament Situation

Before this match, the teams had met six times, and in official tournaments, Serbia led. Ukraine defeated the opponent only in friendly matches: in May of this year with a score of 3:1 and in August 2021 — 3:2. Serbia, on the other hand, has victories at the World Championships (2022) and European Championships (2019, 2021) in its record, as well as winning the Nations League with a score of 3:1.

The tournament standings before the match were complex. A previous victory over Iran allowed Ukraine to rise to fourth place. The defeat by the Serbs was not catastrophic: even in this case, the Ukrainians remained in the top 7. For the Serbs, the situation was even more complicated — even with a maximum victory, they could not guarantee themselves the seventh spot and a place in the playoffs.

Match Progress: From a Confident Start to Fighting for Every Ball

Both teams took to the court with updated lineups compared to previous games. If the Serbs made many mistakes against the Turks, they played reliably in the match with Ukraine. The Ukrainians, on the contrary, lost reliability compared to the game against Iran.

The first set ended with a victory for Ukraine with a score of 25:22. Dmitry Yanchuk played a decisive role, bringing victory to the team at the end of the period. However, in the second set, individual flashes from Kovalev or Tupchiy were not enough. Ukraine managed to maintain balance only until the score was 14:14. Then the Serbs practically stopped making mistakes and confidently took the set — 25:17.

The third set developed according to a similar scenario: equal struggle continued until the score was 15:15. Then came a powerful surge by the hosts, against which the Ukrainian team was powerless. The score was 25:21 in favor of the Serbs.

The Fourth Set and Heroes of the Match

In the fourth set, the hosts had to show character, but they managed to snatch victory in a tough struggle with a score of 25:23, thereby "closing" the match. With such a high-scoring result, it is difficult to speak of an unambiguous hero of the confrontation, however, individual players stood out brightly.

Vasyl Tupchiy tried to "wake up" the team in the third set, delivering a series of three aces in a row. Oleg Plotnytsky also played his usual bright game, but these efforts were not enough for a positive result. Dmitry Yanchuk remained a key figure at the end of the first set, becoming one of the few who could turn the tide of the match in favor of the Ukrainians.
