The Ukrainian men's volleyball national team played a tense match in the 11th round of the Volleyball Nations League against the Turkish national team. The encounter with a direct competitor for a top-7 spot drastically changed the tournament standing of the "blue-and-yellows," forcing them to fight for survival in the race for a spot in the finals.

Following a recent setback against Serbia, the team coached by Raul Losano desperately needed a victory. The start of the match fully met the fans' expectations; however, the Ukrainians failed to maintain the initiative until the final whistle.

Match Progress: From a Confident Start to a Loss in the Tie-Break

The first set was a hard-fought battle. The Turks led until the middle of the set, but the Ukrainian team managed to seize the initiative, playing strong defense and blocking. Ultimately, the set ended with a score of 27:25 in favor of Ukraine.

The second set demonstrated the "blue-and-yellows'" complete control from start to finish. The team confidently executed their attacks and gave the opponent no chances, securing a convincing victory with a score of 25:20.

However, the situation changed in the third set. The opponent took advantage of a series of Ukrainian errors and quickly took an 8:2 lead. Despite the team's attempts to catch up, the set eventually closed with a score of 25:23 in favor of Turkey.

The fourth set was a true collapse for the Ukrainian national team. The opponents earned eight set balls and converted the very first one, which demoralized the team. The set ended with a score of 25:16.

The decisive fifth set (tie-break) began with an even struggle that lasted until the score was 8:8. After that, the Turkish volleyball players made a decisive run that allowed them to win the match with a score of 15:11.

Tournament Consequences and the Final Push

Due to this defeat, the Ukrainian national team lost positions and dropped to seventh place in the standings, letting Turkey move ahead. Now, the seventh spot is the limit — it is the last ticket to the Volleyball Nations League playoffs.

The fate of the ticket to the final stage of the tournament will be decided in the coming days. The final match of the preliminary round will see Ukraine play against the German team on Sunday, July 19, at 17:30 Kyiv time. The team, strengthened ahead of the decisive week, will be forced to show its maximum potential to maintain its chances of reaching the playoffs.
