The Ukrainian government is preparing a major reform of traffic rules. The main focus will be on tightening liability for drivers who systematically violate traffic regulations and modernizing violation detection systems. This was announced by Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko in her Telegram channel.

The initiative resulted from a meeting between the head of the government and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko. According to Sviridenko, the current situation requires comprehensive measures to reduce accidents and improve discipline on the roads.

Government Action Plan

As part of the preparation of new decisions, several key areas are being considered:

  • Strengthening liability for systematic violations, especially for speeding.
  • Introduction of stricter sanctions for drivers who regularly ignore restrictions.
  • Improvement of both automatic and non-automatic violation detection systems.
  • Legislative regulation of the use of light personal electric transport.

Sviridenko emphasized that the final wording of the laws will be formulated taking into account proposals from society. "I sympathize with everyone who has lost loved ones on the roads. We must do everything so that such tragedies cannot be repeated," the Prime Minister noted.

Resonant accident as a catalyst for change

The discussion on strengthening control intensified after the tragedy in Kyiv on Chokolovskyi Boulevard. A Mercedes-Benz car at high speed crashed into an underground pedestrian crossing where people were present. As a result, four people died, including a 12-year-old boy, and three others were injured.

According to law enforcement agencies, the 49-year-old driver had previously been held accountable for traffic violations on multiple occasions. 39 violations were recorded for his vehicle, mostly related to speeding. On June 8, the Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv sent the suspect to custody for 60 days without the right to post bail.

This case became a turning point, forcing the authorities to reconsider their approach to road safety and take measures that should prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
