The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center (Ukrhydrometcenter) has warned of a large-scale change in the synoptic situation that will affect the entire country in early July 2026. After several days of anomalous heat caused by subtropical air masses, a cold atmospheric front from Central Europe will invade the region. This event will lead to a sharp drop in temperatures and increased wind activity.
From anomalous heat to thunderstorms
In the first half of the week, from June 29 to July 1, Ukraine was under the influence of a powerful anticyclone. The temperature peak hit the western, central, and southern regions. During the day, thermometers showed readings from +33 to +37 °C. Zakarpattia, Lviv, Volyn, and Ternopil regions were particularly hot, where temperatures in some locations reached critical levels of +38…+39 °C.
However, starting July 2, the situation will begin to change radically. The line of the atmospheric front will reach the western and northern administrative regions. Meteorologists forecast a change in weather: instead of scorching heat, thunderstorms are expected, with hail and gusty wind strengthening possible in some areas. Daytime temperatures in these regions will drop to normal values in the range of +23…+28 °C. The capital region, including Kyiv, will also feel a weakening of the heat and short-term precipitation.
Dynamics of front movement
The process of displacing warm air will be gradual. On July 3 (Friday), the zone of low atmospheric pressure will move to the central and part of the eastern regions. In the center of the country, the temperature will drop to +24…+29 °C. Southern and eastern regions will remain under the influence of transformed warm air for longer, however, a decrease in the temperature background is expected there by the end of the day as well.
Climatic context and forecasts
Despite the expected cooling, July 2026 will remain warmer than usual overall. According to Ukrhydrometcenter data, the average monthly air temperature is forecast at +21.8…+26.0 °C, which is 2–3 °C higher than the historical climate norm. In the Carpathian region, indicators will be somewhat lower — within +18…+20 °C.
Precipitation will also be distributed unevenly. The monthly volume of precipitation is modeled in the range of 26–71 mm, however, up to 119 mm is expected in the Prikarpatia region, which is associated with the passage of active fronts.
Expert recommendations
In connection with the passage of the thunderstorm front and sharp fluctuations in atmospheric pressure, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) and medical authorities have issued a number of recommendations for citizens.
First and foremost, experts urge to observe safety rules during gusty winds and monitor current hydrometeorological warnings. During peak hours in the first half of the week, when temperatures reached their maximum, it is recommended to limit exposure to direct sunlight.
Special attention is paid to people with chronic cardiovascular diseases. A sharp transition from extreme temperatures to relative coolness may cause thermal stress, so this group of citizens should be especially careful. According to World Meteorological Organization standards, such sharp fluctuations in summer temperatures and the emergence of blocking anticyclones are manifestations of regional climate changes, requiring adaptation of the utility and agricultural sectors.
