The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are preparing to implement their own artificial intelligence system named 'Marichka'. The new system, developed on the principle of ChatGPT, is designed to radically accelerate the decision-making process for commanders on the battlefield. The launch of the project is reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing data from 'Public News'.
From 12 Hours to Instant Calculation
According to the Central Research Institute of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, current standards require regiment or brigade commanders to spend a colossal amount of time. To make a single tactical decision, officers spend from 6 to 12 hours processing about 20 different documents and reports.
The head of the institute, Yuri Klyat, explained that the 'Marichka' neural network was created to solve this problem. The system is capable of centrally collecting scattered information, calculating the ratio of combat potential between the sides, and modeling possible courses of action. At the same time, the final decision remains with the human — the commander.
Why 'Marichka'?
Developers chose the name after a patriotic Ukrainian female name. At the testing stage, the system successfully handled the tasks set on test data. However, for security reasons, the technical specifications and working algorithms of the neural network are not disclosed.
The next stage will be the continuation of AI training and testing. It is expected that the implementation of the system will increase the efficiency of command posts at the brigade, army corps, and even troop group levels.
AI Already on the Frontline
The implementation of 'Marichka' is not an isolated case. Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the AFU, Andriy Lebedenko, confirmed that elements of artificial intelligence are already actively used in the modern Ukrainian army. According to him, AI is integrated into drone control systems, radars, and certain types of weaponry.
«There is artificial intelligence in the drone. In the system that controls the weapon or radar, there are already elements of artificial intelligence. And there is a system that collects information and plans it», — noted Lebedenko, emphasizing that the main goal of these technologies is to accelerate information processing and troop management.
Earlier, in August 2025, then Commander-in-Chief of the AFU Oleksandr Syrsky confirmed the active use of AI in the army. According to him, separate units have been created in the General Staff and other structures dedicated to implementing artificial intelligence in the military sphere.
