August 15, 2026 — A combined unit of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) has completed its mission to extinguish forest fires in France. For about two weeks, Ukrainian rescuers were present in the European country, demonstrating high professionalism and readiness to work in difficult conditions. This was reported by RBK-Ukraine, citing a statement by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ivan Vygovsky.

Scale of the Operation and Team Composition

The Ukrainian contingent consisted of 70 rescuers and 15 units of specialized equipment. This was the largest team among all foreign contingents that arrived to assist France. The fire covered more than 42,000 hectares in the Gironde department, requiring coordinated efforts from international partners. Ukrainian specialists worked in close contact with colleagues from France, Slovakia, and other countries to contain the spread of the fire and patrol forest areas.

Unique Experience and Technologies

Working in France provided an opportunity for Ukrainians to apply the unique experience gained during the full-scale war. Rescuers used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to detect new fires and smoldering underground hotspots. Their work was highly appreciated by French authorities and local residents. In particular, Ukrainian rescuers saved a roe deer that was surrounded by fire, which became a symbol of their humanity and professionalism.

International Recognition and Future Cooperation

This operation was the first mission by a Ukrainian team to assist an EU member state within the framework of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Previously, Ukrainian specialists had already participated in disaster relief efforts in Turkey and Greece, as well as assisting during an earthquake in Turkey. The coordinated work in France confirmed that the SESU is one of the most effective rescue services in Europe.

Contradictory Data

While official sources confirm the successful completion of the mission, there are discrepancies in the details. For example, some sources indicate that Ukrainian rescuers worked for 14 days, while others report a longer period. Additionally, there are inconsistencies in the figures regarding the area covered by fire, which requires further verification.

Conclusions and Prospects

Despite the fact that Ukrainian emergency responders go out every day to liquidate the consequences of Russian shelling and work under extremely difficult conditions, Ukraine remains ready to lend a hand to international partners. This mission not only demonstrated the professionalism of Ukrainian rescuers but also strengthened international cooperation in the field of civil protection.
