In the face of a critical shortage of expensive Western air defense missiles, Ukraine is betting on technological asymmetry. Instead of burning Patriot missiles costing hundreds of thousands of dollars on cheap drones, Ukrainian engineers have created a solution that causes enemy weapons to miss their targets without even reaching them. This is the Lima electronic warfare (EW) complex, developed by the startup Cascade Systems.

The system's operation is based not on physical destruction, but on digital manipulation. As the developer with the callsign 'Alchemist' explained, the complex creates powerful jamming fields that disrupt satellite navigation. But Lima's main weapon is coordinate spoofing. The system mimics GPS and GLONASS signals, causing missiles and drones to 'think' they are in a completely different location.

'We can make their missiles fall into fields instead of hitting targets,' the developer says. In some cases, the system successfully deceives the enemy to the point where weapons approaching a city 'confidently' fly towards Peru. This creates a so-called 'dead zone' where drone control is completely lost, and it simply falls in a safe place.

The Economics of War: 58 Thousand Euros vs Millions

Lima's main advantage is unprecedented economic efficiency. The cost of one unit is around 58 thousand euros. For comparison: one Patriot PAC-3 missile costs as much as would be enough to deploy protection for an entire large city using Lima complexes. This is critical given that Western missile stocks are depleting, and supplies are insufficient even for basic coverage.

Cascade has already delivered over 400 complexes. Since July 2024, they have been actively used, and by October 2025, the system was integrated into the protection of critical civilian infrastructure. Over the last 18 months, Lima has jammed over 20,500 Shahed drones and redirected dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles.

The Battle of Algorithms: Response to 'Comet' and New Bombs

The development of the system was not a linear process. In early 2025, Russia began using upgraded 'Comet' antennas, which made previous versions of EW ineffective. This forced Cascade Systems engineers to go into the 'lab' and hack the enemy's protection algorithms again. 'That's when the real life began,' recalls 'Alchemist'.

Today, the system has learned to counter even unguided aerial bombs, which were previously difficult targets due to new Russian antennas. Maksym Skoretsky, Head of the EW Department of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, notes: 'Even if an aerial bomb deviates from the target by about 20 meters, it already means the target will continue to exist'.

However, developers warn against illusions. EW is not a panacea. If a missile loses its satellite signal, it may continue flying on its inertial guidance system, although accuracy drops sharply. Nevertheless, the chances of a direct hit on a critical object with the Lima system active drop rapidly.

Future Strategy

The first versions of Lima appeared back in 2022, when the company invested over $2 million of its own funds into development. Government contracts only arrived at the end of last year. Now Ukraine is facing a tactic of mass strikes, where the enemy bets on quantity, trying to overwhelm air defenses. In this race of numbers, cheap and smart electronics become the shield that allows resources to be preserved for protection against the most dangerous threats.
