The Japan Sumo Association has officially released the updated banzuke rankings ahead of the November Kyushu Basho tournament, cementing the new status of the Ukrainian athlete. Twenty-two-year-old wrestler Danylo Aonishiki Yavhusishyn has strengthened his standing among the world sumo elite by securing a highly prestigious position in the hierarchy.

A New Position in the Elite Rank

The Ukrainian athlete not only maintained his second-highest ozeki rank but also climbed to the Ozeki East 1 position. According to centuries-old professional sumo traditions, the eastern side in the rankings is considered significantly more prestigious than the western side, although financial compensation remains equal.

Division Rivals and Upcoming Bouts

The Ukrainian's main competitors at the top level in the upcoming tournament will be Japanese wrestler Kotozakura and Mongolian athlete Kirishima, who secured the Ozeki West and Ozeki East 2 positions respectively. The upcoming Kyushu Basho tournament will take place from November 8 to 23 in Fukuoka, gathering the strongest representatives of this martial art.

Prospects and Redemption at the November Basho

For Danylo Aonishiki, the November tournament will provide a great opportunity to contend for the main trophy and seek revenge for his defeat in September. During the Aki Basho tournament, the Ukrainian competed for the title until the very end, but ultimately lost to Japanese yokozuna Onosato in the decisive match of the final day.
