The Ukrainian higher education system has demonstrated steady growth despite the ongoing war. In the prestigious global Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 (THE), a record 22 Ukrainian universities have made the list for the first time in the country's history. This is five more universities than in the previous year, marking a historic high.
The official confirmation of this record was announced by Serhiy Babak, Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Education, Science, and Innovation. According to him, the increase in the number of institutions represented in the list is an important signal of the resilience of Ukrainian science and education.
Assessment Criteria and Context
The THE 2026 ranking covers a massive sample: it included 2,191 universities from 115 countries worldwide. Experts evaluated institutions based on five key parameters:
- Teaching quality;
- Research environment;
- Impact of scientific publications;
- Industry collaboration;
- Level of international outlook.
Making it onto this list is a significant achievement; however, Serhiy Babak urged against euphoria. He emphasized that upon detailed comparison with global leaders, Ukrainian universities still demonstrate a substantial gap. Shortcomings are observed in the quality of scientific research, the development of scientific infrastructure, funding volumes, and the depth of international cooperation.
Results of Ukrainian Universities
This year, Ukrainian universities occupied various positions in the ranking. The leaders of the list showed the best results, while the remaining 20 universities that made the ranking entered the broad 1501+ group.
This success complements the general picture of educational development in the country. Earlier, the results of the national ranking "TOP-200 Ukraine 2026" were published, where the leader was Lviv Polytechnic National University. Experts also continue to monitor the positions of universities in the Scopus 2026 ranking, evaluating their scientific activity.
