Ukrainian literature has suffered a heavy loss: on October 6, 2026, at the age of 66, the prominent writer, publicist, and public figure Serhii Baturyn, known to readers by his real name Serhii Onyshchenko, passed away. The sad news was first confirmed by the writer's family via social media, noting that his death was the result of a long and grueling battle with a severe illness.
Chronicle of the Battle Against Serious Illness
The author's final years were overshadowed by serious health issues. Back in December 2024, Serhii Baturyn consulted a private medical clinic due to stomach problems, where doctors diagnosed him with cancer. The writer bravely went through 12 courses of chemotherapy; however, over time, the aggressive disease stopped responding to standard treatment, and the tumor began to progress.
Literary Heritage and Creative Path
Born in Kyiv on April 4, 1960, Serhii Baturyn connected his life with the written word since his student years, graduating from the philological faculty of the Kyiv State Pedagogical Institute. Throughout his prolific creative life, he created more than 20 novels and novellas in a wide variety of genres—from historical and detective prose to philosophical works and fantasy. His talent was repeatedly recognized with prestigious literary awards, including the famous "Coronation of the Word" award, the "DNIPRO-BOOK-FEST" contest, and the Oles Ulianenko Prize.
Farewell Details and Memory
The tragic event resonated with deep sorrow in the hearts of colleagues from the National Writers' Union of Ukraine and the Association of Ukrainian Writers, of which he was a member. Family and friends announced that the farewell ceremony for Serhii Baturyn will take place on October 10 at 13:00 in the mourning hall of the administrative building at the Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv.
