A new dispute over traffic rules has erupted in Ukraine. Drivers have appealed to the government to reconsider vehicle marking requirements. The issue concerns the abolition of the mandatory installation of front state license plates on passenger cars.
Petition against front license plates
The initiative was voiced through the official portal of electronic petitions of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. The document with registration number 41/010261-26ep appeared on the website on Monday, July 6, 2026. The author of the appeal, Dmytro Viktorovych Kotyk, asks officials to initiate changes in the legislation and regulatory legal acts of the country.
At the time of the news publication, as of 18:00 on Tuesday, July 7, 40 signatures had been collected under the petition. There are 91 days left to reach the threshold of 25,000 votes required for mandatory consideration by the government.
Arguments of opponents of the front plate
In justifying his idea, Dmytro Kotyk points to aesthetic and technical problems associated with the presence of a front plate. According to the activist, the presence of a sign worsens the appearance of many cars, especially those models whose design does not originally provide for its installation.
In addition, the author of the petition emphasizes the risks for the vehicle itself. Mounting a front license plate often requires drilling holes or using fasteners, which can lead to damage to the body or bumper.
Technology guarding the order
The text of the document notes that under modern conditions, there are enough technical means for vehicle identification. Supporters of the abolition of the front plate believe that the rear sign and data from surveillance cameras are quite sufficient for road control.
Considering the above points, the author of the petition asks officials to consider the possibility of making changes to the legislation. The document concludes that the proposed measures will contribute to preserving the integrity of cars and improving their appearance.
