The summer season in Ukraine has begun with a colossal load on the railway system. During the first half of June, from the 8th to the 21st, "Ukrzaliznytsia" transported more than one million passengers. However, the statistics only confirm the obvious fact: demand for travel critically outpaces the carrier's capabilities, creating an acute ticket shortage.
The battle for seats: the hottest routes
The situation is most tense on key tourist and business routes. The greatest influx of people is observed on the Kyiv — Odesa and Kyiv — Lviv directions. Railway officials admit that even with significant transport volumes, supply cannot keep up with demand.
At "Ukrzaliznytsia," they understand the scale of the problem and are taking measures to solve it. To meet the demand for weekend travel, the company is forced to add trains to popular routes. One of the methods to combat the shortage has been the redistribution of resources: carriages previously used on routes with lower loads have been transferred to more in-demand lines.
Who is traveling on trains: from young athletes to military personnel
The structure of passenger traffic during this period has its own specifics. A significant proportion is made up of children's groups. Among the passengers are young athletes heading to competitions, as well as children of active and deceased military personnel who are getting the opportunity to rest.
Separately, it is worth noting the large-scale humanitarian and logistical task. During the reporting period, "Ukrzaliznytsia" transported 7,654 military personnel, ensuring a special seat reserve for them.
Records and overload
The load on individual trips reached extreme values. The most popular train last week was the international service No. 705/706 on the Kyiv — Przemysl route. During this time, the train transported 26,841 passengers. The average load per carriage over two weeks was 692 passengers, which indicates a critical density of passenger traffic.
A two-fold shortage of seats is also recorded on other busy routes. To relieve the situation on the country's most popular route — between Kyiv and Lviv — railway officials are making the decision to schedule additional trips.
High-speed "Intercity+" and future plans
To meet demand on the Kyiv — Lviv line, an additional high-speed train "Intercity+" No. 743/744 will operate. It will begin operations on June 23 and 24, allowing for the transport of some passengers who were unable to buy tickets for regular services.
The prospects for the summer season also look tense but prepared. It was previously reported that from June 28, 2026, "Ukrzaliznytsia" will introduce an updated summer schedule. As part of the new timetable, 12 new trips will be scheduled, and movement on a number of routes will be accelerated to use the network's capacity as efficiently as possible.
