The fifth round of the Ukrainian Premier League is set to be one of the most packed at the start of the championship. The spotlight is on several clashes where not just points but also positions in the top of the standings are at stake. The headline event of the round will be Karpaty's home match against Shakhtar, which many experts are calling a battle of the leaders. Meanwhile, Dynamo will try to erase the impression left by their heavy defeat to Bukovyna, while Polissya, sitting comfortably in the lead group, will host the underdog Kudrivka. According to Sport RBC.UA, supported by BETKING, the round's schedule was adjusted by the UPL Directorate, so the kick-off times of some matches differ from the original ones.
Round Schedule and Timeline
The round opens on Friday, September 4, with Chornomorets vs. Levyi Bereh, kicking off at 13:00. On the same day at 18:00, Polissya will host Kudrivka. On Saturday, September 5, three matches will take place: at 13:00 Kryvbas will face Kolos, while Kharkiv will meet Obolon; at 18:00 the central clash of the round will be played — Karpaty vs. Shakhtar. Sunday, September 6, will close the round with three matches: at 13:00 Dynamo will host LNZ, at 15:30 Veres will play Zorya, and at 18:00 Epicenter will face Bukovyna. This is the current day-by-day and kick-off distribution following the changes made by the UPL Directorate.
Central Match: Karpaty vs. Shakhtar
The meeting in Lviv will be a major test for both sides. Based on the results of the previous rounds, Karpaty and Shakhtar are considered the league leaders, although, as noted in the fourth-round review, both teams simultaneously "stumbled" and dropped points. This makes their head-to-head even more intriguing: each side will be aiming not just to grab the maximum but also to preserve or strengthen their lead. For Karpaty it is a home game and a chance to show character in front of their fans, while Shakhtar will come looking for answers to their recent setbacks and for confirmation of their status as one of the season's favorites.
Polissya vs. Kudrivka: Leader vs. Underdog
After four rounds, the Zhytomyr side sit in the lead group with nine points: Ruslan Rotan's team beat Chornomorets, Kharkiv and Shakhtar, and suffered their only defeat to Zorya. In the previous round Polissya recorded one of the biggest upsets of the start, beating Shakhtar 2:0 in Lviv, and now have a chance to cement their place in the top zone. Kudrivka, on the other hand, have only two points after four rounds and have not won yet: the Kyiv side drew with Levyi Bereh and Obolon, and lost to Shakhtar and Epicenter. The head-to-head history in the UPL is entirely on the hosts' side — Polissya won both previous meetings with an aggregate score of 4:0, which makes them the clear favorite according to BETKING odds (Polissya win — 1.26, draw — 6.10, Kudrivka win — 12.00).
Dynamo Seeks Redemption, Kolos — Their First Win
Kyiv's Dynamo approach the match with LNZ as a team in urgent need of a win: in the previous round the "blues" suffered a crushing defeat to Bukovyna, and the Sunday game will be their chance at redemption. In the other Saturday pairing, Kryvbas (four points after four rounds, coach Patrick van Leeuwen) will try to make amends in front of their fans in a home match against Kolos. The Kovel side are at the bottom of the table with one point after three matches: defeats to Zorya and Dynamo and a goalless draw with Obolon, while their first-round match against Chornomorets has been postponed. The UPL head-to-head balance is even — three wins for each team and two draws — however, Kryvbas have not beaten Kolos in four matches in a row (two draws and two defeats), so the hosts will have to break an uncomfortable streak.
Head-to-Head and BETKING Odds
The opening match of the round between Chornomorets and Levyi Bereh also has interesting statistics: in two UPL head-to-head meetings the Kyiv side won both times with an aggregate score of 2:0, and the last match on the Odesa side's home ground in March 2025 ended in a 1:0 away win. Chornomorets approach the game after their first championship win (1:0 against Kryvbas in the fourth round) and have three points after three matches, while Levyi Bereh have drawn three times and have not won yet. BETKING odds for this pairing: Chornomorets win — 3.51, draw — 3.00, Levyi Bereh win — 2.43. In the Kryvbas vs. Kolos pairing the bookmaker's quotes look like this: Kryvbas win — 3.20, draw — 3.33, Kolos win — 2.28. The remaining pairings of the round — Kharkiv vs. Obolon (in four UPL head-to-head matches one win each and two draws), Veres vs. Zorya and Epicenter vs. Bukovyna — complete the picture of the fifth round, in which every team will be fighting for their own scenario of the week.
