The Matchday 9 program of the Ukrainian Championship features eight matches spread across four matchdays. The central event of the weekend will be Sunday's showdown between Polissya and Kyiv's Dynamo in Zhytomyr, which will essentially determine the power balance in the battle for second place heading into the winter break. In addition, fans will keep a close eye on Shakhtar's meeting with Kolos, as well as Kryvbas versus LNZ. The matchday kicks off on Friday with Obolon hosting Veres, and concludes on Monday with Kharkiv playing Lviv (Levyi Bereg). Three matches will be played on both Saturday and Sunday.
Matchday Format and Opening Fixtures
The opening fixture of the matchday—Veres visiting Obolon—will take place on Friday. In the previous round, the Kyivans were unable to finish their match against Kryvbas due to an air raid alert, but the minutes played showed that returning to their home stadium after pitch reconstruction benefited the team. Prior to their defeat against Shakhtar last round, Veres enjoyed a seven-game unbeaten run; according to the publication's assessment, Oleh Shandruk's coaching staff is capable of quickly restoring Rivne's confidence. In another pairing, Zorya will host Chornomorets: Luhansk look unstable (a win over Polissya and a defeat to Kryvbas), while the Odesa side under Roman Hryhorchuk has failed to win any of their last four games.
Polissya vs Dynamo: The Battle for Second Place
Sunday's game in Zhytomyr is de facto decisive in the race for second place, at least until the end of the autumn part of the championship. Polissya climbs higher with each season, whereas Dynamo has been stuck in a playing crisis across both last season and the current one. The Kyiv management still maintains trust in Ihor Kostiuk, but a defeat against the Zhytomyr side could severely shake the head coach's position. At the same time, Polissya's match against Bukovyna a week earlier caused concern among local fans, but the caliber of the Zhytomyr club's players, according to Sport RBC.UA, is by no means inferior to Dynamo's squad, promising one of the brightest matches of the season.
Shakhtar vs Kolos: European Context and Rotation
The Miners are heading into the match against Kolos in high spirits following their Champions League victory over AEK. Considering the upcoming European fixture against Inter scheduled for October 21, there is a high probability that Arda Turan will rest his key players. Kolos has a chance to pick up points, but Ruslan Kostyshyn's team must first cope with their own psychological hurdles. The emotional background for Kovalivka is currently favorable—they defeated Epicentr 3:1 last round. Reminder: in head-to-head history, Kolos has only two wins against Shakhtar, both under Kostyshyn's management, with the most brilliant one dating back to April 2025 (4:2).
Kryvbas vs LNZ and Other Encounters
Patrick van Leeuwen continues to build a new Kryvbas following the mass departure of players in the summer, and a process of tactical settlement is underway in Kryvyi Rih. Results are still suffering: Kryvbas's last UPL win dates back to August 9 against Zorya, which leaves the team in 14th place in the standings. LNZ is doing slightly better, with Vitaliy Ponomarov's side occupying 7th place with 11 points. Special attention should be paid to the match between Karpaty and Epicentr: Fran Fernández is facing an attacking crisis—alongside Yan Kostenko's long-term suspension picked up against Veres, Nazariy Rusin was sent off in the previous match, making the selection of wingers one of the main tactical intrigues. Epicentr, having lost their last three UPL matches, will be considered the underdog, though Serhiy Nahornyak has repeatedly surprised Ukrainian fans.
Resonance Around Bukovyna vs Polissya
The match between Bukovyna and Polissya in the previous round generated significant resonance: Serhiy Shyshchenko expressed outrage over the referee's decision after the game and did not hold back in his assessment, prompting Polissya to appeal to the UAF Ethics and Fair Play Committee. Bukovyna played a solid match, but the Zhytomyr side rescued a draw from a penalty in the dying minutes. The matchday will conclude on Monday with Kharkiv facing Lviv, a fixture symbolic in that both teams play their home games at the Levyi Bereg stadium, making the away status purely formal for Kyiv; Kauan Baptistella will be unavailable for Kharkiv in this encounter.
