On July 15, Ukraine celebrates two significant state holidays — the Day of Ukrainian Statehood and the Day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus — Ukraine. On this day, the capital was visited not only by local authorities but also by a number of European leaders, including the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Ursula von der Leyen's Visit: The 11th Since the Start of the Invasion
One of the first to arrive in Kyiv was the head of the European Commission. This is already her eleventh visit to the Ukrainian capital since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. Von der Leyen emphasized that the current moment is special: Ukraine is demonstrating a powerful military momentum, and the situation on the front is gradually improving.
New Initiatives for Defense Integration
As part of the visit, von der Leyen plans to announce new measures for the integration of the defense industries of Ukraine and the European Union. According to her, this will allow for increased production volumes and accelerate the delivery of military equipment and hardware. Also on the agenda is the discussion of Ukraine's accession to the EU and the country's preparation for the upcoming winter.
European Leaders in Kyiv
In addition to the head of the European Commission, other representatives of European countries arrived in the Ukrainian capital. Among them are the President of Romania, Nicolae Ciucă, the leader of Moldova, Maia Sandu, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić. The full list of European leaders who will visit Kyiv on July 15 is not yet disclosed.
Context: Negotiations with the EU and Support from Allies
Earlier, on July 14, Ukraine opened the sixth cluster of negotiations with the European Union. This step became possible after EU ambassadors supported its opening on July 10. The sixth cluster became the second for Ukraine after the key "Foundations" cluster. Recently, Estonia called for accelerating the process of Ukraine's accession to the European Union, which also reflects the growing support for the country from European partners.
