NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Chris Donahue, made a bold statement intended to reassure European partners: the United States will not leave the Baltic states to face the threat of a Russian invasion alone. According to the general, preparations to repel a potential attack are already in full swing.
Deterrence by Action, Not Words
Donahue's statement came against the backdrop of the creation of a new NATO land command for the Baltic states, which was unveiled in Estonia the day before. The American general emphasized that US combat readiness is not just a matter of diplomatic promises. He used a vivid phrase to convey the essence of his position to allies: "The United States will stand by you. That is how deterrence is built: not with words from a podium, but with soldiers whose boots are stuck in the mud".
These words serve as a direct response to growing anxiety in Europe. Previously, US President Donald Trump had repeatedly alarmed allies by stating that in the event of Russian aggression, Europe would have to defend itself. Donahue's rhetoric, conversely, aims to restore confidence in the reliability of Article 5 of the NATO Charter.
Strengthening the Eastern Flank
Words are backed by concrete actions. The North Atlantic Alliance has already established a second command zone covering the Baltic states and Poland. This strategic decision allows for the rapid deployment of additional military contingents directly to the borders with Russia, creating a dense security buffer.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius highly praised this step, calling it a "tangible and convincing demonstration of unity." In his words, it demonstrates the alliance's collective determination to defend every inch of allied territory.
Global Context: From Ukraine to Turkey
The strengthening of NATO's position is taking place against the backdrop of ongoing discussions regarding the Russo-Ukrainian war. In the US, legislators are working to accelerate ammunition deliveries to Kyiv: a bipartisan bill aimed at addressing this issue has been introduced in the Senate. Furthermore, the alliance is discussing the allocation of colossal funds for Ukraine's defense, even without direct US participation.
At the same time, Turkey has re-entered the discussion. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has put forward a new proposal for resolving the conflict, adding another important element to the complex mosaic of the current geopolitical situation.
