Valeriy Bondar: "It was hardest against Lukaku, but now I rank him alongside Dijkereesh"

Valeriy Bondar is one of the key defenders for Donetsk's "Shakhtar" and the Ukrainian national team. In an exclusive interview with RBK-Ukraine, he candidly discussed working with the new coach Arda Turan, tactical changes under Andrea Maldera, Konoplya's transfer, and facing off against Europe's top strikers.

World Cup: Favorites and Disappointments

After finishing his vacation, Bondar admitted that he closely followed the World Cup. In his opinion, the main favorites of the tournament are the national teams of France and Argentina. He expressed hope that these teams would meet in the final, as happened previously.

As for disappointments, the defender expected more from Germany, which, in his opinion, could have gone further. He also noted that he did not feel satisfaction from Sweden's elimination, although he supports European teams at the 2026 World Cup.

Confrontation with the Best Strikers

One of the toughest opponents in Bondar's career was Romelu Lukaku. However, he now ranks him alongside Dijkereesh, noting that the latter has all the qualities of a modern high-class striker.

Recalling youth football, Bondar admitted that Phil Foden already showed serious potential back then. He became one of the most difficult opponents for him in the U-19 category, which confirms his growth to the level of one of the best clubs in the world.

Physical Preparation and Transformation

At Shakhtar's pre-season training camp, Bondar emphasized the importance of physical readiness. He admitted that he loves playing matches the most, but does not like running. Nevertheless, he understands that a physical foundation is the basis of success in modern football.

Igor Burbas noted Bondar's physical transformation, pointing out that he has become stronger and more confident in physical actions. The defender said that he regularly visits the gym and monitors his diet to maintain his form at a high level.
