One of the largest and most significant sporting events in the United States took place in Chicago — the Soldier Field 10 Memorial Run. Every year, this event gathers thousands of people to honor fallen military personnel on Memorial Day. This year, 8,000 participants started the race, choosing distances of either 10 kilometers or 10 miles. Among the runners were Ukrainian servicemen, whose participation became a symbol of incredible spiritual resilience.

The Story of Andriy Savenko: From Injury to the Finish Line

Particular attention was drawn to the story of Lieutenant Colonel Andriy Savenko of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. For him, this run was not just a sporting challenge, but an opportunity to prove to himself and others that even after a severe injury, one can return to an active life. Savenko is a former professional athlete, a world champion in close combat and combat jiu-jitsu. He began defending Ukraine back in 2014, serving in the Air Assault Forces, and later, as part of the GUR special forces, carried out tasks on the front line and behind enemy lines.

After a severe injury, the officer required hip replacement surgery. He had to learn to walk again, but sport became the main tool for his recovery. Already last autumn, Savenko won the world championship title again in the up to 80 kilograms category. However, preparation for the run in the USA required incredible effort. Doctors recommended that he forget about long distances, but Andriy did not give up. Step by step, working with doctors, rehabilitation specialists, and coaches, he prepared for this moment.

Atmosphere of Solidarity and Support

On the 10-kilometer distance, Savenko felt like part of a large community. Americans, according to him, showed patriotism and incredible support for Ukrainians. "It was felt that Americans were patriotic and treated Ukrainians incredibly well. They supported throughout the entire run, which was energizing," noted the intelligence officer. The support of the Ukrainian diaspora, which accompanied the runners along the entire route, also played a special role.

The run itself was incredibly difficult for Savenko. Due to physical limitations, every kilometer was a test. "For the last 2 km, every 100 m I asked how much was left," he admitted. But the main thing for him was not to stop and cross the finish line. "For me, the main thing was to complete the distance, not to stop, to cross the finish line, despite the difficulties," emphasized the Lieutenant Colonel.

Results of Ukrainian Intelligence Officers

Ukrainian servicemen demonstrated a high level of preparation. In the overall standings, they took 2nd and 8th places, which became a bright example of their endurance and professionalism. Andriy Savenko, who overcame his limitations, became one of those who inspired other participants and spectators with his story.

This run became further proof that sport is capable of uniting people, overcoming borders, and giving hope. The story of Andriy Savenko is just one of many, but it particularly vividly illustrates the strength of the human spirit and the importance of support in difficult times.
