For teachers, the voice is the primary tool of the trade, subjected to colossal daily strain. In the modern school environment, where educators often work in large classes without high-quality sound amplification equipment, the risk of developing specific diseases increases. However, Ukrainian legislation provides mechanisms to protect the health of education workers.

Bogdan Bozhuk, General Director of the State Institution "Y. I. Kundiev Institute of Occupational Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine," explained in a comment to RBC-Ukraine that teachers have the right to have certain pathologies recognized as occupational diseases. This opens access to free treatment, compensation, and rehabilitation.

What is considered a teacher's occupational disease

According to the expert's definition, a chronic occupational disease is a pathology that arose as a result of performing labor duties exclusively or predominantly under the influence of harmful factors of the production environment. For teachers, the key risk factor is the overstrain of the vocal apparatus.

To have a diagnosis recognized as occupational, strict criteria must be met. The commission reviews all medical documentation, paying special attention to work experience. As a rule, the duration of exposure to the main factor (vocal load) must be at least 10 years. Clinical and instrumental examination results, as well as the dynamics of disease development, are also taken into account.

Algorithm for recognizing a disease as occupational

The procedure for confirming the status of a disease is regulated by the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 337. It is important to understand that only specialized medical and preventive institutions in Ukraine have the right to establish a primary diagnosis of a chronic occupational disease (or poisoning). A regular polyclinic cannot issue such a conclusion.

The key stage is the collection of documents. The territorial department of the State Labor Service provides a sanitary-hygienic characteristic of working conditions. This document records the actual vocal load in hours per week, which serves as direct evidence of the occupational risk factor.

After receiving conclusions from occupational pathologists and a specialized commission, the patient applies to the Expert Team for the Assessment of Daily Functioning of the Person (ETADFP). It is this structure that determines the degree of loss of working capacity as a percentage of the salary.

Compensation and treatment

Recognizing a disease as occupational entails specific social guarantees. According to the ETADFP conclusion, a teacher can count on:

  • Sanatorium-resort treatment in specialized institutions;
  • Restorative treatment courses;
  • Free provision of medications.

In the event of organic diseases of the vocal apparatus, specialized therapy is prescribed, including inhalations, taking antihistamines, and physiotherapy procedures.

Experts emphasize that maintaining professional health requires not only timely visits to doctors but also adherence to work and rest regimes. In conditions where issues of teachers' wages are also at the center of attention (salary increases are planned for autumn 2026), health protection becomes no less important a component of social support for teachers.
