Despite active peace initiatives from US President Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin has no intention of stopping military operations against Ukraine. On the contrary, the Kremlin is considering the possibility of a new escalation of the conflict in the coming months. This is reported by Reuters sources close to the Russian leadership, as transmitted by RBC-Ukraine.
Refusal to Negotiate and New Goals
According to the agency's data, based on conversations with three interlocutors with access to the Kremlin, the Russian side does not support the idea of peace negotiations with Kyiv. One of the sources, who regularly meets with Putin, stated that the probability of escalation in the near future is very high.
The main task for the head of state remains establishing full control over the entire Donbas. In this regard, Putin recently criticized advisors who proposed a ceasefire along the current frontline. For the Kremlin, compromise is not a priority.
How Attacks on Infrastructure Affected Moscow's Plans
The situation on the front and Kyiv's actions have a direct impact on the strategy of the Russian leadership. Recent strikes by Ukrainian drones on Russian oil refineries, ports, and fuel infrastructure have not forced Moscow to reconsider its plans. On the contrary, Reuters interlocutors claim that these attacks have only strengthened the Kremlin's determination to continue hostilities.
Position of Officials and Intelligence Data
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, in a comment to Reuters, confirmed Russia's readiness for a peaceful settlement but added an important caveat: Moscow has sufficient capabilities to act independently and continue the special military operation.
From the Ukrainian side, the picture looks even more alarming. An official from Kyiv told Reuters that intelligence data from recent months indicates that Russia is preparing for new large-scale military operations, not for peace. This refers to possible offensive operations on Ukrainian territory and other potential scenarios.
Air Defense Problems and Trump's Decision
Against the backdrop of growing tension, Ukraine is facing serious logistical problems. Due to an acute shortage of missiles for Patriot air defense systems, Ukrainian military personnel are forced to switch from automatic to manual mode of operation. Operators now choose targets for engagement themselves to save scarce ammunition.
However, the situation may change soon. US President Donald Trump stated that the United States will provide Ukraine with a license to produce its own Patriot interceptor missiles. According to him, production could start within two to three months, which will help relieve some of the burden on the Ukrainian air defense system.
