Kyiv, which was awarded the UNESCO "City of Music" status last year, is transforming its architectural history into a living musical instrument. A new cultural tradition has been launched in the capital: concerts of carillon music will now be performed on famous bell towers, accessible to every resident and guest of the city.

A New Voice for Historic Towers

The initiative belongs to the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA). Valentyn Mondryevskyi, Deputy Head of the KCSA, emphasized that the implementation of the project is a logical continuation of the recognition of the capital's musical potential. "Kyiv has always been a city with powerful musical traditions," the official noted. "Regular carillon music concerts are another step in the development of this tradition."

The start of this new tradition was marked on May 31. The first concert took place on the bell tower of the St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery. From this moment on, weekly performances have become an integral part of Kyiv's cultural calendar.

What is a Carillon and Why It Matters

A carillon is a unique musical instrument consisting of a system of bells cast in a specific order. Unlike the familiar ringing, where strikes are delivered mechanically or manually, a carillon is controlled by a performer via a mechanical keyboard. This allows for the creation of full-fledged, complex musical compositions, turning massive bells into the strings of a giant organ.

This tradition is an important part of European culture and has long been heard in historic cities around the world. Now, it has firmly established itself in the Ukrainian capital.

A Symbol of Partnership with Belgium

The appearance of the carillon in Kyiv's public space received an additional boost following the opening of the renovated Belgian Alley near the St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery. The sound of the instrument became the central element of the solemn ceremony, symbolizing cultural partnership between the two countries.

Luc Jacobs, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Ukraine, noted that the carillon is an important component of Belgian cultural heritage. According to the diplomat, its appearance in Kyiv contributes to strengthening ties between the states.

City authorities plan for music to become even closer to people, and concerts on bell towers to become a habit for residents, creating a unique atmosphere in the historic center of the city.
