The story of Ukrainian tennis player Yuliia Starodubtseva's performance at Wimbledon 2026 has come to an end. In a tense first-round match, the athlete, ranked 55th in the WTA, could not maintain a winning pace and lost to her opponent playing under a neutral flag, Anna Blinkova (WTA 114).
Three sets and a loss of points
The match on the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club turned into an exhausting battle lasting 2 hours and 25 minutes. For Yuliia, this was already her third start in the main draw of Wimbledon, and on the previous two occasions, she successfully passed this hurdle. This time, the opponent had a lower ranking, and the beginning of the match only confirmed the Ukrainian's status as the favorite.
In the first set, which lasted more than an hour, Starodubtseva led confidently with a score of 4:1. Despite Blinkova managing to level the pace of the game, the Ukrainian finished off her opponent in the tiebreak, taking the set 7:6 (7:3).
In the second set, Yuliia again seized the initiative, going up with a break 2:0. However, a series of errors allowed the opponent to take control of the game, go ahead (3:5), and take the set. In the deciding set, the Ukrainian player's game completely fell apart: Blinkova led 4:0 from the start and calmly closed out the match.

The match statistics are paradoxical: Starodubtseva outperformed her opponent in the number of actively won points (29:27) and even made fewer unforced errors (33 against 34). The key factor was the conversion of break points. Blinkova saved 11 of the Ukrainian's 14 chances, while she herself took 8 games on Yuliia's serve. Now the head-to-head record stands at 2:1 in favor of Blinkova.
For Yuliia Starodubtseva, this defeat is painful also in terms of the ranking. Last season she played in the second round of the grass major, so now she will lose the points earned.
