Strategic Window: Six Months of Advantage
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has identified a critically important time frame that could become a decisive factor in the current conflict. In an interview with Politico, he stated that Kyiv has a "short-term opportunity" to launch a new cycle of military innovations. The success of this strategy depends directly on the speed of action by Western partners.
The essence of the proposal is to outpace the adversary. If Ukraine receives the necessary resources before the Russian army adapts to current conditions, it will provide Ukrainian troops with an advantage of approximately six months. According to Fedorov, this is the timeframe needed to finish the job if assistance is timely.
New Logic of Aid: From Bureaucracy to Efficiency
The Defense Minister emphasized that the approach to military aid must be radically revised. Instead of focusing on what is convenient for donor countries to provide, funding should be directed toward what is actually needed on the front lines. Fedorov cited a specific example of efficiency: Denmark quickly redirected orders from standard 155mm shells to extended-range variants.
"They signed the contract quickly and made the first delivery just one week later. If there is the will and strength to overcome bureaucracy, everything is possible," Fedorov noted. Thanks to this approach, together with international partners, billions of dollars have already been redirected to the most urgent needs.
Economic Calculation: Weapons as a Tool to Increase Salaries
An important aspect of the strategy is the financial relief of the Ukrainian budget. The faster partners provide weapons, the more state funds will be freed up for social needs of the army, specifically for increasing payments to military personnel. Fedorov also reminded about current reforms: improving air defense and the mobilization system, which also require funding.
The Minister cited impressive statistics on the effectiveness of the Ukrainian army: "Where else can you find troops capable of destroying 30,000 to 35,000 Russian soldiers monthly?" According to him, today the Ukrainian army is the most prepared in Europe.
Financial Support and New Solutions
Real funds are coming in to support these plans. On June 30, 3.9 billion euros were transferred to the special fund of the Ukrainian state budget from the European Union — the first defense tranche under the Ukraine Support Loan program. These funds will be directed to the needs of the defense industry and urgent front-line supplies.
Parallel to this, active diplomatic efforts are underway. Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, where they discussed concrete steps to strengthen defense capabilities. Furthermore, Zelenskyy announced intriguing solutions to strengthen air defense, the details of which will become known in the near future.
