Ukrainian tennis player Alexandra Oleynikova, the country's fourth-ranked player and 44th in the WTA world rankings, has encountered a rigid stance from the governing body of women's tennis. Just before the start of the prestigious WTA 1000 series tournament in Toronto, Canada, the athlete was forced to cancel a charity online auction she had planned to support Ukrainian military personnel.
Charity vs. Regulations
Oleynikova's initiative aimed to raise funds to equip the 413th Separate Drone Systems Battalion "Raid" of the SBSS of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The winners of the auction were to receive a "Certificate of Honorary Benefactor" and a personal invitation from the tennis player as guests to the tournament.
However, the WTA blocked the event, citing regulations that prohibit the "sale of accreditations." The athlete herself emphasized that the auction was selling a certificate, while the provision of Guest Player passes was her personal gratitude to those helping to protect the lives of Ukrainians.
Harsh Criticism of Double Standards
Oleynikova could not hold back her emotions and harshly criticized the organization for its lenient attitude towards representatives of the aggressor state, contrasting this with the treatment of Ukrainian initiatives. In her statement, she pointed out that WTA tournaments often feature invited benefactors engaged in humanitarian aid in other regions of the world.
"We constantly see invited benefactors at WTA tournaments who distribute vitamins to pregnant women in Africa. But people who help save the lives of Ukrainians are, obviously, unwelcome to the WTA," the tennis player wrote.
Particularly upsetting to the Ukrainian was the presence at the tournament of athletes who support the Russian government. According to Oleynikova, the WTA calmly provides such individuals with a platform for publicity and earnings, seeing no problem in it.
Response to the Blockade
To conclude, the tennis player addressed the association's leadership directly with crushing sarcasm that became the quote of the day: "WTA, I sincerely apologize that my refusal to quietly die is causing you such problems."
Oleynikova expressed hope that fans in Toronto and the numerous Ukrainian diaspora in Canada would evaluate such actions by the tennis leadership. The event caused a wide resonance in the sports community, becoming another example of the conflict between political realities and sports regulations.
