For Xbox console owners, a new era of cross-platform play has arrived. Thanks to a strategic partnership between Xbox and Ubisoft, owners of digital versions of certain games can now get their PC versions for free. This innovation not only expands the content catalog in the Xbox ecosystem on Windows but also changes the approach to purchasing digital copies.

As reported by RBK-Ukraine citing an official Xbox Wire press release, the essence of the innovation lies in expanding cross-platform gaming capabilities. Now, purchasing a digital title from the approved list for the console automatically unlocks access to its PC version via the Ubisoft Connect client.

How to get games on PC

The mechanism for obtaining content is simple but has its nuances for new and existing buyers. All new digital purchases from the list of compatible games will provide access to both versions immediately. However, for players who already have these games in their Xbox libraries, the process will be phased.

The rollout of free copies for existing owners will continue until August 4. For games to appear in the computer media library, users must update the Ubisoft Connect app to the latest version.

Important details and limitations

Developers have clarified several issues regarding content transfer and saves to avoid confusion among gamers:

  • One-way transfer. The reverse action is not provided. If you only have the PC version of the game, you cannot get a free console copy. The promotion works exclusively in the direction "from Xbox to PC".
  • DLC and expansions. Previously purchased Season Passes and story expansions will be automatically transferred to the PC version. You can check for the presence of content in the game properties tab within Ubisoft Connect.
  • In-game items. In-game currency and consumable items are not transferred between platforms. However, in projects supporting cross-progression, all earned progress will be saved.

Expanding the Xbox on PC catalog

In addition to the free transfer of games, the Xbox on PC service has also been replenished with premium editions and expansions for key projects from the publisher. This makes the platform more attractive to fans of Ubisoft franchises.
