June 18 marked a significant day for Ukraine's defense system. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking to journalists, stated that a "very important event" would take place today on the path to creating a joint anti-ballistic system with European partners.
Strategic Partnership and "Ramstein"
The head of state thanked Germany and other EU countries for the extensive assistance prepared for today's meeting in Ramstein. The main agenda item is the discussion of the future "European missile defense system".
Zelenskyy emphasized the bilateral nature of the upcoming negotiations: "Today, a very important event should take place, where German representatives can share with Ukrainians what we need, and we will share what they need, in order to take the first step towards a future missile defense system".
New Opportunities for Ukraine's Defense Industry
This step fits into a broader context of support for the Kyiv side. Recall that following the G7 and US summit held on June 16, a decision was made to issue licenses. This will allow Ukraine not only to purchase but also to manufacture air defense systems and long-range weapons on its own territory.
Strengthening the Arsenal: New Deliveries
Alongside discussions on strategic systems, Western allies continue to increase the volume of material assistance:
- Germany: Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed the allocation of an additional $400 million. These funds will be used to purchase air defense systems, ammunition, and missiles for Patriot surface-to-air missile systems.
- Belgium: Brussels announced the transfer of seven F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by the end of 2026. This batch will include three combat aircraft and four more intended for use as parts donors.
