On June 8, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held an important phone call with two key figures in the US administration — US President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and the American leader's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing Axios correspondent Barak Ravid, who shared the information on social network X.

Call during a technical landing

Ukrainian Presidential Advisor Dmytro Lytvyn clarified the details of the call: it took place during Zelenskyy's technical landing of his plane at Chișinău airport. According to the Ukrainian leader, the conversation was "very positive." Zelenskyy thanked his interlocutors for their readiness to work actively in the coming weeks to give momentum to diplomatic efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine.

Key topics of discussion

During the call, two central issues were addressed:

  • The upcoming G7 summit, which the US President will attend.
  • Information from the Ukrainian side regarding Russia's position on a peaceful settlement.

It is worth noting that since last year, peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia have been taking place with US mediation. Witkoff and Kushner are actively involved in this process and have already visited Moscow several times to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Current status of negotiations

At present, the negotiations are on hold. Russia demands the fulfillment of its ultimatums regarding the Donbas as a condition for continuing the dialogue. However, according to the head of Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service, Kyrylo Budanov, Witkoff and Kushner have confirmed that they will visit Kyiv in the near future. After that, according to the plan, they are to travel to Moscow for new consultations.

Thus, despite the current deadlock, diplomatic activity continues, and Ukraine is counting on an active role for the US in advancing the peace process.
