Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has harshly criticized the idea of weakening or lifting international sanctions against Russia. In his view, any steps in this direction are a fatal mistake that will only strengthen the aggressor's defense industry and provide resources to its army.
The head of state made this statement in his official Telegram channel, according to media reports citing RBC-Ukraine. Zelenskyy emphasized that lifting restrictions is not a diplomatic gesture, but direct support for occupation forces by aiding the Russian military-industrial complex.
Economic argument: why the market is not reacting
The Ukrainian leader paid special attention to the economic consequences. He noted that previous attempts to ease sanction pressure have yielded no dividends for the global market.
"After the easing of some sanctions, we did not see any surprises, such as a drop in global prices for oil, gas, or diesel," Zelenskyy stated.
The President cited a specific figure to support his argument: the share of Russian oil accounts for only 5% of global supplies. In this regard, he questioned the effectiveness of liberalizing the restriction regime, posing a rhetorical question about how such a small share could significantly change the situation in the market.
Kremlin psychology and the need for strength
In Zelenskyy's opinion, attempts to soften pressure are often justified by the desire to build a dialogue with Moscow. However, the Ukrainian leader considers this approach absolutely wrong. He is convinced that the Russian leadership is unable to perceive diplomatic arguments constructively.
"They do not understand words or empathy and perceive this as a sign of weakness," the President emphasized.
Instead of concessions, Zelenskyy calls for the opposite action: "We must be strong and impose more sanctions against them".
Context: shelling and challenges to NATO
These statements were made against the backdrop of ongoing attacks. Earlier, Zelenskyy noted that to stop the regular shelling of Ukrainian cities, the consolidation of the international community and the continuation of tough pressure are necessary. In his words, world leaders must intensify economic restrictions and introduce so-called "long-range sanctions".
Furthermore, the situation is exacerbated by the fact that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are trying to shoot down Russian drones flying towards Poland and the Baltic states. Zelenskyy pointed out that in this way, the Kremlin is not only attacking Ukraine but also testing the air defense of NATO countries, checking the Alliance's reaction to provocations.
