Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has officially called on the U.S. leadership to enforce severe restrictive measures against the Russian Federation. According to him, amidst ongoing daily escalation, it is imperative to use all available leverage, including legislative initiatives previously developed by American senators.
Call to Washington and Graham's Act
Writing on his Telegram channel, the Ukrainian leader emphasized the importance of implementing the late Senator Lindsey Graham's bill on "hellish sanctions." This document implies large-scale economic pressure not only on the Russian state, but also on any entities providing financial support to the ongoing war. Zelenskyy noted that in response to brutal strikes from Moscow, the global community must provide a stronger response.
Demands for European Partners
In addition to appealing to the United States, Kyiv is maintaining active dialogue with the leadership of the European Union. Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that similar requests were sent to European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, urging new EU sanctions packages.
White House Position and Outlook
Earlier, following a meeting with Donald Trump in New York, the Ukrainian president stated that Washington could potentially deploy severe economic sanctions if the Kremlin fails to de-escalate. Meanwhile, the U.S. leader confirmed he would apply sanctions against Russia if deemed necessary.
