Computer simulation of a giant impact in which a disk that formed the Moon could have condensed within hours

The visualization models the moment a Mars-sized body strikes the proto-Earth. A stream of molten material is flung off the planet, forming a swirling disk of debris. New simulations suggest the whole process may have taken only a few hours.
