Kyiv has launched a pilot 5G network — the first wave of the new generation of mobile connectivity is now available to users. The next city where the technology will be tested is Odesa. This was announced by Stanislav Prybytko, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
Where is 5G already available?
Currently, the coverage area includes central Kyiv — from Maidan Nezalezhnosti to Bessarabska Square. However, each operator has its own priority locations where subscribers can connect to 5G. A full list of available zones can be found on the regulator’s official website.
The number of such zones will grow gradually. Expansion of coverage depends on several factors: security, the end of martial law, city size, and operators’ readiness to invest in infrastructure.
Why is Odesa next?
Odesa was chosen as the next city for the pilot launch due to its dense urban development and status as a major metropolis. This will allow testing of network performance under conditions of high user concentration and complex urban environments.
What will 5G offer regular users?
The main difference between 5G and 4G is speed. Files will download in seconds, videos and web pages will open instantly. Additionally, the network can support significantly more devices per square meter — meaning connectivity won’t slow down in crowds or at large events.
Another key advantage is minimal signal latency. This is critical for video calls, online gaming, and any real-time services.
Will tariffs change?
Pilot 5G testing does not automatically lead to tariff changes. By agreement with operators, users can access the new network within their current service packages. The Ministry of Digital Transformation does not directly influence pricing but coordinates the process with providers.
Thus, Ukrainians gain access to cutting-edge technology without additional costs — currently on a limited scale, but with prospects for rapid expansion.
