Meteorologists from the Volyn Regional Center for Hydrometeorology confirmed that a wave of extreme heat, caused by the intrusion of air masses from North Africa, hit the region on Wednesday.

Records in Manevychi and Kovel

The most dramatic situation developed in the settlement of Manevychi. Here, an absolute maximum air temperature was recorded for the entire history of meteorological observations. The thermometer rose to a mark exceeding the previous record of +38.1°C, which was set relatively recently — just a week ago, on June 29, 2026.

In the city of Kovel, the absolute temperature maximum was repeated. The air warmed up to +38.6°C. This value matches the reading recorded in the same city on June 29, 2026.

Return to 1963

In addition to absolute records, daily maximum records for August 5 were broken in four settlements of the region. The previous values that were surpassed date back to 1963. This indicates that the current weather anomaly is unique for this date on the calendar.

Causes of the anomaly

Specialists from the regional hydrometeorological center explain the cause of such weather as the spread of hot and dry air from northern Africa over the territory of Volyn. This synoptic situation led to the formation of a stable anticyclone, which blocks precipitation and contributes to further heating of the surface.

Forecast: Extreme heat

The situation is not stabilizing. According to specialist warnings, on August 6, heat is expected to intensify to critical levels — from +40°C to +42°C. Meteorologists classify the current situation as a "meteorological natural disaster".

The synoptic situation is expected to change in the coming days, when heat will be replaced by thunderstorms and gusts; however, in the short term (August 6), residents of the region should exercise special caution and follow recommendations for preventing heatstroke.
