In the Zhytomyr region, against the backdrop of a general gradual change in weather conditions across Ukraine, a historical meteorological phenomenon has been recorded. On the night of August 13, 2026, a new temperature record was set in the region. According to data from the Zhytomyr Regional Center for Hydrometeorology, the air temperature at the weather station in the city of Korosten dropped to +4.9°C. This value became the lowest indicator for this date for the entire period of instrumental observations.

Historical Context and Data Gap

The new record is a significant event for climatologists as it surpassed the previous absolute value, which had been held for nearly three decades. Until this day, the minimum temperature for August 13 was considered to be +7.3°C, recorded in 1998. Thus, the current result was 2.4 degrees lower than the historical minimum. It is important to note that observations at the Korosten weather station have been conducted since 1945, making this statistical series sufficiently representative for analyzing long-term climate trends.

Causes of the Anomaly: Atmospheric Front

The sharp cooling was a result of the passage of an atmospheric front moving from west to east. Previously, Ukraine was gripped by a wave of intense heat, but it is being displaced by a cooler air mass. The passage of this front is accompanied not only by a drop in temperatures but also by increased precipitation. Meteorologists are recording rain, thunderstorms, and in some areas, hail and squalls are possible. According to Natalia Ptukha, Head of the Media Relations Department of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, after the front passes, fresher air enters Ukraine, which explains the current temperature anomalies.

Forecast for the Near Future

Experts predict that in most regions of the country, the daytime temperature will be +24...+30°C, and the nighttime temperature will be +15...+23°C. Subsequently, the temperature may drop even further: to +24...+29°C during the day and to +12...+17°C at night. Meanwhile, warmer weather is expected in Zakarpattia, as well as in the south and east of the country. However, the cool days will not last forever. According to Natalia Didenko's forecast, the temperature will begin to rise again in the coming days. A new heatwave is expected on August 16-17. In Kyiv, the warming will start on Sunday, and from Monday, the temperature will return to high levels.
