The Ukrainian military has demonstrated for the first time the practical deployment of rare Finnish Ilmatorjuntaohjus 90M (ItO 90M) anti-aircraft missile systems mounted on Sisu XA-181 armored personnel carrier chassis. A video of the combat operations was published on social media by the 1039th Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment named after General-Khorunzhy Mykola Kapustiansky. These systems, which represent a deep modernization of the French Crotale complexes, are actively protecting Ukraine's airspace from hostile aerial threats.
Features of the Finnish Air Defense Modification
The ItO 90M anti-aircraft missile system was developed in Finland based on the French Crotale all-weather short-range air defense system created by Thomson-CSF and Matra. The main structural difference of the Finnish version from the original is the replacement of the standard French chassis with the reliable Sisu XA-181 6x6 armored personnel carrier. This vehicle provides high cross-country capability and allows for rapid maneuvering in firing positions.
The system is designed to combat aerial targets at medium, low, and extremely low altitudes, protecting strategic objects, command centers, and military units. According to its technical specifications, the ItO 90M is capable of detecting aerial targets at a distance of up to 20 kilometers, providing reliable cover for ground forces.
Technical Parameters and Armament of the Unit
The primary weapon of the anti-aircraft system is the high-speed VT-1 missile. This munition is capable of reaching speeds of about 1,200 meters per second, allowing it to intercept maneuvering aerodynamic targets within seconds.
The effective firing range of VT-1 missiles is up to 11 kilometers, with a maximum engagement altitude of up to 6 kilometers. The combination of a modern radar detection station and powerful missile armament makes the system an effective tool in the hands of Ukrainian anti-aircraft gunners.
Significance of Western Military Supplies for Air Defense
The deployment of rare examples of foreign military equipment demonstrates the diversity of the arsenal involved in Ukraine's air defense system. Along with the Finnish ItO 90M complexes, Ukrainian forces are actively using other modern Western systems, such as Skynex anti-aircraft systems transferred by Germany to repel massive drone and cruise missile attacks. The integration of such systems into the overall air defense structure significantly increases the protection of critical infrastructure and cities.
