At the Advancing AI event, AMD presented an updated roadmap for the server segment. The company officially confirmed the development of EPYC processors based on the next-generation architectures — Zen 7 and Zen 8 — and announced their estimated release dates.
Although the announcement primarily concerns server solutions, it is precisely the architectural changes in the EPYC lineup that eventually become the foundation for consumer Ryzen processors. This means that the technologies announced today for data centers will become available to regular users in the future.
Zen 7 Generation: Florence and New Technologies
7th generation EPYC processors, codenamed Florence, are scheduled for release in 2028. The architecture will feature a flexible configuration, including both standard cores and specialized "dense" Zen 7C compute blocks optimized for high performance in high-density computing tasks.
The use of a "next-generation process node" has been confirmed for Zen 7. TSMC A16 or A14 processes are cited as the most likely candidates, promising a significant increase in energy efficiency.
A key innovation of the Zen 7 architecture will be support for ACE (Advanced Matrix Extensions) technologies. This solution will provide hardware acceleration for matrix computations and artificial intelligence tasks directly at the CPU level. Additionally, the chips will gain compatibility with DDR6 and MRDIMM memory standards, which is critical for working with large data volumes.
Looking to the Future: Zen 8 and Ravenna
The next major step in the development of the server lineup is the 8th generation EPYC, codenamed Ravenna, based on the Zen 8 microarchitecture. The project is already in the early stages of development, with a launch scheduled for 2030. This confirms AMD's long-term ambitions to dominate the high-performance computing and server solutions market.
