"Once I promised, I promised": why Andriy Danilko does not take off his black mask and when he will give it up

Off stage, Andriy Danilko is difficult to imagine without three recognizable elements: a black cap, sportswear, and a mask fastened under his chin. This image, which was once accidental and temporary, has turned over the years into a stable visual brand of the artist. According to Styler (a project by RBC-Ukraine), the singer himself explained how a habit that began in the midst of the pandemic evolved into a conscious gesture tied to the fate of the country.

From pandemic to TV show: how the mask became part of the image

Danilko began wearing a mask during the spread of the coronavirus infection, when it was a mandatory element of the everyday wardrobe for most people. After quarantine restrictions eased, the artist was in no hurry to get rid of it. In an interview with Voice of America, he admitted that his participation in the jury of the TV show "The Mask" also influenced the formation of his appearance. For filming, he chose black sportswear, a cap, and a mask — a combination that proved practical: there was no need to pick out a new outfit every time. Over time, the singer noticed that he felt more comfortable in the mask: it gave a sense of security, and he continued wearing it outside the television set.

A promise made in the first months of the war

A turning point came after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. Danilko made a decision not to take off his black mask until Ukraine's victory. He reminded readers about this in an interview with the Telegraph publication. According to the artist, in the first months of the war, he often communicated with journalists, and it was then that this promise was voiced. "I am ready to take it off right now, but once I promised, I promised," he emphasized. Danilko admitted that at that time he did not assume the military actions would last so long, but he did not change his decision.

The mask does not interfere with the stage, but changes street perception

The artist noted that the mask does not affect his concert activity in any way: on stage, he performs in the persona of Verka Serduchka, for whom this clothing item is not provided. Over years of wearing it, Danilko has grown so accustomed to the mask that he has almost stopped noticing its presence. Moreover, the singer suggested that it is precisely thanks to the mask that he has started to be recognized more often on the street. Separately, he explained his choice of black sportswear in everyday life: the artist consciously separates his personal style from the stage character who appears at concerts in spectacular attire.

Exception to the rule: a photograph without a mask in the summer of 2026

Despite his public promise, Danilko sometimes appears in photos without the usual element of his image. One such instance attracted public attention on June 30, 2026, when drag artist Artur Ozerov published a joint photograph with the singer on Instagram. In the picture, Danilko was sitting at a table with sweets, and his chin was exposed. Some commentators admitted that they did not immediately recognize the artist without the mask. At the same time, appearing in a single frame without a mask does not mean that Danilko has finally abandoned it: the singer himself has not publicly announced any change in his decision and still links taking off the mask to Ukraine's victory.
