Apple speeds up its update cycle: iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 are already in beta testing, while version 27.1 was kept as a "reserve" for the iPhone Duo

Apple has released the second beta build of iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 for developers and participants in the public beta program. This new testing phase began just a few days after the company finalized the stable versions of iOS 27 and macOS 27 under the codename "Golden Gate." Such a short interval between the release of the stable branch and the start of testing for the next minor update is one of the shortest in the history of Apple firmware and points to a revised internal schedule for ecosystem support.

Why Apple skipped version 27.1

The most unexpected decision made by the California-based company was to skip the 27.1 update entirely for the vast majority of devices. According to data confirmed by several industry publications, the 27.1 branch was created and reserved exclusively for the iPhone Duo smartphone — Apple's foldable device, whose launch is planned for October 2026. Millions of iPhone and Mac owners who were waiting for an interim update with fixes and new features have effectively been "skipped over": the relevant build for them is now 27.2. This decision is explained by the fact that the iPhone Duo requires a specific set of drivers and system services that would not be practical to embed in the common branch for the other models.

Accelerated schedule and key new features

Testing of 27.2 is being conducted on an accelerated schedule: the first developer builds appeared in mid-September, and just a week later Apple sent out the second package. The engineers focused primarily on internal system optimization, although the build also includes a number of notable user-facing features. The Health app on iPhone has received an updated interface and new analytics tools powered by built-in AI. The Siri voice assistant with voice AI is expanding its language support: from October, the service will be available in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. FaceTime on iOS has implemented a Dual Capture feature that allows video from the front and main cameras to be streamed simultaneously. The "Up Next" section in Podcasts has been supplemented with blocks of new episodes and unfinished shows, while Apple TV has gained support for multiple user profiles on mobile devices and in the web version, as well as a Multiview mode for watching four sports broadcasts at once on an iPhone screen.
