A significant event took place in the skies over southern Ukraine, marking a new stage in the development of aerial combat tactics. Fighters from the "Lasar's Group" strike unmanned aerial vehicle unit carried out a unique interception of enemy equipment, setting one of the records for the altitude at which a target was destroyed.
This was reported by the Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine, Major General Oleksandr Pivnenko, in his Telegram channel. According to him, at the end of July, the interceptor crew detected and destroyed a Russian ZALA Z-20 reconnaissance drone.
Technical challenge and tactical victory
The particular difficulty of the mission was the altitude of the enemy's flight. The Russian UAV was raised to an altitude of 6400 meters — almost 7 kilometers. Enemy operators calculated that at such a height, the drone would be inaccessible to most air defense systems and interceptors, ensuring its safety while performing tasks.
The ZALA Z-20 drone is designed for reconnaissance and target detection at distances of up to 100 kilometers. However, the attempt to hide in the upper layers of the atmosphere failed. The pilot of the "Lasar's Group" unit caught up with the target and successfully destroyed it, demonstrating the high efficiency of Ukrainian interceptor drones.
"However, this did not prevent our crew from doing their job," emphasized Major General Pivnenko, noting that this incident became one of the records for the successful interception of enemy unmanned aerial vehicles.
Context of the air war
This case is not an isolated success. At the end of June, the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine successfully intercepted Russian "Molniya" unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with artificial intelligence elements for the first time. The targets were destroyed using the same interceptor drones, confirming the growing effectiveness of Ukrainian tactics.
In addition, on July 16, special forces of the Omega Center for Special Operations of the National Guard destroyed a Russian Su-24M bomber at the "Saki" military airfield in temporarily occupied Crimea. These events indicate that Ukrainian forces continue to actively use high-precision strikes and interceptions to neutralize threats.
Successes in the field of drone interception at extreme altitudes open up new opportunities for sky protection and demonstrate that even the most complex tasks can be solved with proper training and equipment.
