Attack on grain ship in Odesa: fire, missing sailors and threat to food security

On Saturday, July 25, a serious incident affecting international shipping occurred in the Black Sea. A civilian vessel departing from a port in the Odesa region became the target of a double attack. The incident took place amidst ongoing regional tensions, where Russia, according to Ukrainian authorities, systematically attacks civilian infrastructure.

According to Ukraine's Minister of Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport, Mykola Kalashnyk, the vessel under the flag of Palau was hit. On board was a significant cargo — nearly 2,800 tons of corn. The attack caused a fire on board, creating a critical situation for the crew.

Rescue operation and casualties

Despite the difficult situation, rescue services managed to evacuate most of the people. Preliminary data indicates that seven crew members and a Ukrainian pilot were saved. However, as of the time of publication, two sailors are listed as missing. Search and rescue operations in the area of the incident are ongoing.

This incident is not an isolated case. Ukrainian authorities note that such attacks have become regular. Recently, the Acting Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybyga, stated that there is a complete blockade of movement along the Ukrainian maritime corridor due to actions by the Russian side. Sybyga emphasized that Russia is attacking civilian cargo ships, creating a threat not only to the region but also to global trade.

Government response and international context

Mykola Kalashnyk called the incident "another deliberate strike against civilian infrastructure." In his statement, he emphasized that such actions demonstrate complete disregard for international law norms. The Minister pointed to a direct threat to shipping safety and global food security.

In connection with the risk of global hunger, Ukraine has initiated an emergency session of the UN Security Council. The country's authorities insist on the necessity of international intervention to protect sea routes.

Recall that a few days before the attack on the Palau-flagged vessel, on July 22, the bulk carrier "Golden Rose" was attacked in the Black Sea. At that time, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) conducted a successful operation, resulting in the rescue of 16 crew members. These events indicate a growing danger for the commercial fleet in the region.
