On August 2, the Ukrainian calendar marks two significant events: a church holiday dedicated to the transfer of the relics of Saint Protomartyr Stephen, and the state holiday of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Holiday in Honor of Saint Stephen
On August 2, the Orthodox Church commemorates the transfer of the relics of Saint Stephen. He was one of the seven deacons chosen by the apostles to serve in the first Christian community in Jerusalem. Stephen became famous for his sincere faith, wisdom, and courage in his sermons, openly defending Christian teachings.
For his beliefs, the saint was accused of blasphemy and sentenced to death by stoning. It is for this reason that he entered history as the first martyr for the Christian faith and received the title of Protomartyr.
According to church tradition, the burial place of Stephen was found many years after his death thanks to a vision that appeared to the priest Lucian. The relics were transferred for public veneration, which became an important event for the early Church and the development of pilgrimage.
Air Force Day of Ukraine
At the same time, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The holiday is established on the first Sunday of August and is dedicated to the military personnel who defend the Ukrainian sky.
On this day, pilots, anti-aircraft gunners, radio engineering troops, and all military personnel who daily stand guard over the country's airspace are honored. Their task is to repel missile and drone attacks, ensure air defense, and carry out combat missions under wartime conditions.

In the folk calendar, this day was considered auspicious for tidying up the house. Ancestors believed that on the feast of Saint Stephen, it was beneficial to bathe in a body of water to strengthen health. There was also a belief that washing with spring water at sunrise helps preserve health.
Saint Stephen is revered as the patron of domestic animals, especially horses. On this day, owners tried to take good care of their horses and not overwork them, showing care and respect for the animals.
