Today, October 1, 2026, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine celebrates the feast of the Intercession of the Holy Theotokos, which is deeply rooted in the centuries-old history of the Ukrainian people. This sacred date also coincides with a state holiday — the Day of Defenders of our state, uniting spiritual protection and the martial feat of modern heroes.
Historical Significance of the Intercession and Spiritual Tradition
The press service of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) emphasizes that the Ukrainian people have revered the intercession of the Mother of God since the times of Kievan Rus, the glorious Cossacks, and to this day. The Mother of God is perceived as the Heavenly Intercessor, helping everyone who turns to Her with pure faith in difficult times of trial.
Defenders Day of Ukraine Amidst War
It is symbolic and natural that on the day of the Intercession feast, Ukraine honors its defenders — military personnel, volunteers, and civic activists, thanks to whom the country continues its heroic resistance against Russian aggression. Amidst the full-scale war, the prayers of millions of Ukrainians are addressed to the Heavenly Protectress asking to shield the army and the people from evil.
Broadcasts of Worship and Participation of Believers
The main solemn services on the occasion of the holiday take place in the Intercession Cathedral in the city of Rivne. For those citizens and believers who, due to security measures or distance, cannot personally attend the churches, official online broadcasts of the OCU services are organized, allowing them to unite in common prayer.
Controversial Data
Despite the established modern tradition of celebrating the Intercession on October 1 following the OCU's transition to the Revised Julian calendar, discussions regarding the old dates according to the Julian style (October 14) sometimes persist in the public space. Nevertheless, official church and state institutions clearly establish the current date of October 1, combining the religious holiday and the honoring of the homeland's defenders at the state level.
