The Baptism of the Lord, or Holy Theophany, remains one of the most revered and spiritually profound Christian holidays. The date of this event is fixed within the church calendar, yet due to recent large-scale calendar reforms, the traditional celebration dates have shifted for millions of believers.
Calendar Reform and Date Shifting
Until recently, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine followed the traditional Julian calendar, according to which Epiphany was invariably celebrated on January 19 every year. However, the transition to the revised Julian calendar, designed to align church life with modern astronomical realities, shifted all fixed holidays by exactly 13 days earlier.
When to Celebrate Epiphany in 2027
Due to these calendar changes, in 2027 Ukrainians and all Orthodox Christians who transitioned to the new style will celebrate the Baptism of the Lord strictly on January 6. This change applies to all immovable church dates, helping believers gradually adapt to modern chronology and unify religious celebrations.
Spiritual Meaning and Traditions of Theophany
The holiday's name is closely linked to the Gospel event of Jesus Christ's baptism in the waters of the Jordan by John the Baptist. Theology emphasizes that at the moment of this sacrament, the Holy Trinity was revealed to the world, which gave the holiday its second great name—Theophany.
