A massive blow to humanitarian infrastructure has occurred in Dnipro, sending a new alarm signal in the context of the ongoing conflict. The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, confirmed that a Russian strike led to the complete destruction of the organization's warehouse. The incident, which took place last Friday, dealt a severe blow to the medical logistics system intended to support hospitals and medical personnel on the front lines.
Details of the tragedy and saving of supplies
According to data received from WHO leadership, the attack was carried out at a time when organization staff and drivers were on the warehouse premises evacuating humanitarian cargo. Despite the critical situation, the team managed to act swiftly: they managed to evacuate 130 out of 300 pallets of vital cargo and left the danger zone immediately before the strike. Fortunately, there are currently no reports of casualties among WHO personnel, although the fact of the destruction of the material base remains catastrophic.
Loss of critical medical resources
The destroyed warehouse stored specialized humanitarian medical goods intended exclusively for medical facilities operating under combat conditions. The bulk of the cargo consisted of WHO emergency medical kits, which are the standard for saving the wounded in field conditions. The loss of the remaining 170 pallets means that hundreds of patients on the front lines may be left without access to necessary medicines, bandages, and resuscitation equipment.
Call for compliance with international norms
Tedros Ghebreyesus, in his statement, called for an immediate cessation of attacks on medical facilities. "Even in wars there are rules. One of them is that health must be protected," emphasized the head of the WHO. He noted that such actions endanger the lives of people who are already in a vulnerable position, depriving them of access to vital assistance. The organization considers such attacks a violation of the fundamental principles of humanitarian law.
Systemic problem: a series of attacks on humanitarian facilities
The incident in Dnipro is not an isolated case. This is not the first strike by Russian forces against international organization facilities in this region. In July of this year, the World Food Programme (WFP) compound of the UN in Dnipro was attacked by drones four times within a single day. This incident became the seventh recorded case in the last three months when clearly marked WFP facilities in Ukraine suffered damage. Such systematicity indicates a disregard for humanitarian corridors and the safety of international missions.
